Sky Trackers with New Technology in Vehicle Tracking

The San Juan Star, March 5, 1999 - Sky Trackers, Inc., a company devoted to the distribution of technological products and services for the automatic location of vehicles, announced recently to become the exclusive representative for Datumtech, Veridian, Datumcom and Trimble Navigation.

"This alliance means a lot to us, since we will represent services and products of prestigious companies which have been leaders in the market for more than 50 years," said Miguel Carbonell, president of Sky Trackers. "It also represents the beginning of a promising research and development program on the island for enhancing these technologies."

Sky Trackers uses a technology known as Global Positioning System (GPS), that belongs to the Department of Defense of the United States. It consists on a constellation of 24 satellites which track the longitude, the latitude and the speed of vehicles on earth. This system is based upon special transmitters which are installed in vehicles to send the information of its position to a dispatch center. In addition, Sky Trackers specializes in offering complete Automatic Vehicle Location services.

"Knowing the exact localization of the vehicles in the fleet is the principal benefit that our customers will get, this will eliminate constant radio calls which are needed to know their location. In addition, it allows the monitoring of vehicles transporting valuable merchandise," said Carbonell.

Sky Trackers started the operations approximately a year and a half ago at Mario Jueå Industrial Park in Puerto Nuevo with 18 employees.

The start-up required an initial investment of some 1.5 million dollars and already has several constructs with municipal police departments, ambulance services and other private enterprises as customers.

The central offices are based in Buffalo, NY, where said technology was originally developed eight years ago and in AVL, five years.

Carbonell also explained they have an emergency back-up plan in case of power failure and that the company is prepared for the anticipated 2-YK bug.

This system counts with diverse services, among them daily and weekly reports, maps, routes, number for emergency calls, location of vehicles, detection of where and when the vehicle's door is opened and the container's temperature, the status of the locks, remote control ignition, emergency response and voice communication.

The equipment is available retail or wholesale and training is provided.

Among Sky Trackers immediate plans is establishing the service area for the parent company's client in Puerto Rico, in order to be able to administrate it directly and expand its services to the South American market, said Carbonell.
